In Memoriam Daniel Berrigan SJ 1921 - 2016
After a life of words an elected silence grief beyond words
this is the worst
time of my long life
Now an incarnate word like Catonsville
means more than Vietnam
burning children everywhere hospitals schools homes
yet the generals say
the need for more intense bombing requires an increased level of collateral damage
Into the chosen quiet surface prescient words written fifty years ago:
The writer or artist who
has had everything to say, may, after he has said everything,
still have left something undone . . .
What is left to do? Some consuming gift of himself which his art, even his art, has left ungiven.
